First flight of the orbiter Challenger. First Tracking and Data Relay Satellite deployed on the first day of the mission. First "spacewalk" of the Shuttle program successfully performed by Peterson and Musgrave. EVA lasted four hours 17 minutes. Space Shuttle Challenger landed April 9, at 10:53 AM PST at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. Mission duration: five days, 24 minutes, 32 seconds. Challenger traveled 2 million miles in 80 orbits.

Patch description: The sixth Space Shuttle flight is represented by the hexagonal shape of the insignia and the six stars, in the portrayed constellation Virgo. The sign of Virgo is also symbolic of the first flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Depicted above the spacecraft's open cargo bay is the combined inertial Upper Stage (IUS) and a Tracking and Data Relay Satellite.
